SUBJECT: SOUTH SUDAN STUDENTS ALLIANCE CONDEMN THE CONTINOUS VIOLATION OF THE CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES AGREEMENT IN SOUTH SUDAN
The alliance of the Congress of South Sudanese Patriots for Peace and Reconciliation (C.S.S.P.P.R) East African sector, and the South Sudan students Association in Kenya (S.S.S.A.K), condemned in the strongest term possible, the continuous violation of cessation of hostilities Agreement in south Sudan.
The entire South Sudanese students’ fraternity and the community living in Kenya expressed grave sadness to both sides of the conflict for not heeding to the voices of reasons, by not respecting the cessation of hostilities agreement recently reached and ratified through the auspices of our regional body, Inter-Governmental Authority for Development-IGAD, in the Ethiopian Capital (Addis Ababa.)
We condemned with contempt it deserved the recent recapture of LEER, PAYIJIAR and MATHIANG Counties of Unity and Jonglie State respectively by the Government forces and the retaking of the Upper Nile State‘s capital MALAKAL by the Rebels’ Forces yesterday.
We urge the President, General Salva Kiir and the leader of the SPLM/A in opposition, the former Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar and the overall South Sudanese leadership; to first instill the heart for the people before their burning political ambitions. The violence has so far killed over 10,000 and left half a million people displaced. We are in absolute grip of despair orchestrated by the catastrophe caused in this violence.
The current living conditions in south sudan is compared to that of Syria. And it is high time, We call it; enough is enough, Failure to that, the world will secondly and evidently pronounce our country a failed state, two years after freeing ourselves from the yoke of Arab Monolithic Khartoum‘s regime. The president General Salva Kiir must now do that which he must do, at his disposals first than anybody else involved in the conflict to prevent the potential escalation of civil war, even if that may mean compromising his position as duly elected president of the Republic.
He ought to unconditionally release all the remaining detainees that he had accused of attempting to oust him from power. We as a student’s fraternity in diaspora, have yet to find convincing documentary evidence linking the detainees and those who are still at large to the alleged claims. We presumed until proven contrary that the violence unpremeditatedly unfolded on 15th December, 2013 as a result of disagreement among the Presidential Guards.
Nonetheless, we also appeal to those in the opposition who had claimed that rebellion was imposed on them, to continue seeking peaceful solutions to the crisis as they earlier portrayed. They must understand that military revolution must go hand in hand with the political training, for an authentic revolution is not just a question of pulling a trigger; its purpose is to create a fair and a just society.
We call on the international community and the AU to expeditiously investigate the alleged use of cluster bombs in the ongoing conflict in south Sudan; we are deeply worried by the use of such banned and atrocious weaponry, there is no doubt that the young nation, the republic of South Sudan neither manufactures nor store them in their arsenals; for those countries who might have been directly involved in the frontal fighting be thoroughly investigated, and that there should be no stone left unturned in as far as this issue is concerned
Finally, we would like to precisely and categorically outline them as followings:
- That the ongoing violence is not a tribal war between Nuer and the Dinka as it has been reported and reiterated in various sources that have had a privilege to report on the same. That the long hand of the law will ultimately caught up with all those who had premeditatedly incited or fueled ethnic impasses irrespective of their status in the land.
- In as much as we doubted the alleged coup attempt, we also vow NOT to accept any forceful political transfer of power prior to the exhaustion of the ongoing mediation talks in Addis Ababa.
- That the Ugandan troops and the entire Uganda leadership to heed at the voices of reasons from all quarters of the globe to roll back it troops from the frontline; for we support peaceful, amicable political settlement to the crisis.
- That the army commanders from both sides who continue violating the cessation of hostilities agreement by attacking or capturing towns hold by either side be directly held responsible for war crime and for violation of aforementioned agreement. .
- That the expeditious investigation to all the atrocities committed be undertaken by independent UN agencies
- That there should an immediate humanitarian access to all the affected people in various UN camps, we also appeal to all humanitarian agencies to extend their hands by providing all health and food assistant to the people affected across the country.

ETHNIC PRIDE, A CURSE TO SOUTH SUDANESE PEOPLE
‘‘While some are very proud of their ethnicity, and call traitors those who reject their tribal ethnicity, there is nothing worse than loyalty to ethnicity of tribe, poverty and foolishness. Indeed one should be proud of betraying and quitting useless ethnicities. it’s been three months now since this horrifying incident engulfed our society. So far, half a million people displaced and 10,000 and more got killed in cold blood. Conflict expertise has compared the current living conditions in our country to that of Syria; and it’s obvious that, if there are no expeditious and sounding mechanism undertaken to rescue the remaining destitute souls; we shall ultimately be in for a rude shock. As we converse now, the catastrophes that has been inflicted in many part of the country is something an unimaginable.
We have wittingly inflicted this inerasable damage unto ourselves and to our properties for a very simple issue that can be resolve amicably using our internal institutions. We are all victims of our own thoughts and action; and we shall only have ourselves blames for this when our gods returns from holidays and finds we threw all towers to the dogs.
Once upon a time, a story of a Dog family was told. that story is said to have a significant impact on their today‘s life. The tale was narrated in this way; a few millenniums ago, not sure whether it was before the Birth of Christ (B.C) or after his death (AD); it was told that Dog family were once a wealthy family in the Animal‘s kingdom.
One morning, they organized a luncheon in one of the king‘s palace; and every member was formally invited for the event including their young’s and the Elderly. On this day, it was said that every edible substance, including the extraordinary food stuff usually cooked for the King were made available for every individual present on the material day. Upon completion of the speeches by the speakers who were arranged to spoke in that event; they went for lunch, when they begun eating, each felt extremely satisfied to an extent that some could not afford walking. Those who took beers drank all kind of dinks at their disposal.
In the midst of this joyous occasion, a fabricated rumor circulated rapidly among the revelers that the function marked the end of a hunger; ‘‘from today onward, there would never be a hunger anymore. All Bitches and puppies were foolishly and authoritatively misadvised to carry away all kinds of foods kept in their houses. Immediately the rumors reached everybody, they all ran to their respective kennels to threw away their belongings; believing that the food cooked at the King‘s palace would forever be available.
A couple of days after the party was over, and each family members were told to returned to their respective kennels, they realized that all their possessions were thrown away. Hence, from that particular moment, the Dogs became poor and poorer up to date.
Comparatively, when south Sudanese were granted their long awaited independent and began to get salaries and passports to facilitate their movement overseas, the only things the leaders did was to invest outside the country, registered their children as citizens of the foreign nations; and even advised them to marrying foreign ladies, they do their banking in various foreign institutions; leaving all our local banks coughing.
They again went as far as provoking and inflaming the minds of the destitute grassroots people by ethicizing their thinking; telling them that, ‘‘why do you worry with community X and A; that they don’t have intellectuals, that they are marginalized groups, that they can never rule this country. That this tribe never fought the liberation war, when you asked them which war; while south Sudan attained its independent through secret ballot? They could not answer that question.
They continue speaking to the people with the anger that inflames their emotions instead of talking with firmness that open their eyes; and uplift themselves as a country and share the long suffering and difficulties; and converts those difficulties into opportunities by embracing one another as a nation. Today, with the ongoing bloodletting violence, it is apparent that those who had earlier boosted for having grabbed national wealth may ultimately be the one grounding their tooth.
This heinous act has undoubtedly betrayed the immense efforts of our regional and international friends who had stood firmly with us during our initial and final days of struggle for independent; and more significantly the profound unwavering sacrifices of our martyrs.
The ongoing crisis seem to have justified beyond reasonable doubt; the statement made by our former President; Field Marshal Omar El Bashir, who once said at the eve of our independent that ‘‘the reason why he has always remain adamant and hesitative in allowing south Sudanese ascertain their long desired autonomy, was because we could not manage to govern themselves.’’
I had strongly objected this statement. I termed it as colonial and slavery oriented. Human beings are the same everywhere in the world notwithstanding their various localities and races. People only become different when their psychologies are selectively cultured. I believed that if south Sudanese are diagnosed and treated of a cancer call ethnic pride; they would be much prosperous like or than any other society in the region or the world at large.
The cure to the aforementioned virus is none other than charismatic, nationalistic, visionary, selfless leadership epitomized by Julius Kabarage Nyarere who hailed from very tiny community in Tanganyika but made it possible to unite hundred tribes currently inhabiting the republic of Tanzania.
Now we are shamelessly and grudgesly saying; ‘‘We knew that president have failed the country; that they knew he does not possess the prerequisite academic capacity to govern the country; that they knew he frequently and unknowingly Mutilated the constitution; that they knew he has ethicized our governance and the entire political landscape. But as long as he hailed from our mighty tribe, who are cares’ ‘‘he must maintain the seat notwithstanding these foreign voices. The voices that they called foreign are dissident individuals from other communities within the country and anybody else within the community that uttered the songs of his ouster. It’s as result of this perception that make many people t date continue believing that indeed there was an attempted overthrow of government even when the same cannot be substantiated.
The other embattled section are regrettably saying; even though they consciously knew that their leader had never attempted to execute anything that surpasses their expectation or even though they had proven that he cannot partakes anything good to them when he ascend to power, he must forcefully proceed there; Laughly, upon getting a glimpse of such hearsays, a reasonable persons of Dak Buoth ‘s stature who knows the meaning and the utmost purposes of leader would impatiently interrogate this craziness; now which is which between such a twin like statements?
The common justification given by this two entangled group is that, ‘‘there is a super natural blessing to any one whose community have had a president; that one can easily access everything he desire including employment and decent burial, etc. that when your fellow tribesman is in presidency; even your dialect or mother tongue becomes a language of power that ought to be spoken by visitors. I doubt whether someone would disagree that south Sudanese did not conceptualized this notion?
The barbaric death of Brother Isaiah Abraham who was murdered in cold and Renegade Gatluak Gai Majak who was killed by then Unity state government plus George Athor are being forgotten. As we are grappling with this continued national crisis; the death of those gallant heroes who have made immense indelible contribute to our country are being referred to as an inside problem; which can be resolve later when the dust get calm.
Today or later, When I stood up or sit under the famous Jiath Liech (Liech tree, a tree like Mugumo tree in kenya) in Unity state demanding justice for the inhuman killing of comrade Gatluak Gai Majak , No doubt that I could be call an indigenous insurgent. Likewise to anybody else who tried to open up the death of Isaiah Abraham, that person would be called a traitor. He would be told why are you opening up the air when we are dealing with foreign war? To me, I feel that, there should be no community right without an individual right. It would be an idiotic to allow somebody to compromise you right for tribal rights.
The reports of the alleged selective killing of Civilians in juba and other parts of the country is something that will go down in history as being caused by ethnic pride. Majority of the south Sudanese population knew that the President was not supposed to do what he did; but at some points its impressive to all his cocoons for it is like the Nuer Supremacy and chauvinism has been shaken and left in fragility. They said it also served well as restitution to the infamous 1991 deaths which was allegedly reported as being orchestrate by the latter ‘s ruler.
Nonetheless, the latter whose relatives got killed in juba massacre have vowed never to retreat or surrender but to unequivocally roll the tanks to the perpetrators ‘s door step in the shortest times possible, and that efforts are at advance stages. I always felt so disheartening and shameful to see some people murdering other vulnerable and innocent fellows in the name of revenging what other people did to them; like recently witnessed in some parts of the country where majority of the innocent Dinka where killed in cold blood by angry Nuer Youth who said their inhuman and barbaric action was prompted by their relative’s killing in juba.
Whenever a leader wrong or appear incapable in his leadership, people will say ‘‘no don’t question that, you will be ventilating the air, that he is our fool, that he should not be exposed, though he is not doing anything, let him be there, that he is ours; that one can get everything he desire by the virtue that he hailed in the same community with a leader.
This perception is what lead to me asking; what really is an ethnicity? Is ethnicity chosen or inherited? Allow me to use my thoughts and that of the Great Pan Africanist Mr. Koigi Wamwere ‘s understanding of ethnicity. Early ethnicity is chosen for one by parental upbringing and socialization by education, religion and values. In adulthood, ethnicity is chosen by individual. Hence, for me, my Nuer ethnicity is involuntary and mostly inherited while south Sudanese ethnicity is deliberate, self chosen and supreme because It is of my own volition. In south Sudan and like in many parts of Africa, ethnicities we belong to are determine by our parents and society. While others are self chosen and supreme because it is of our own free wills.
For me, south Sudanese ethnicity is not an inheritance but a deliberate choice to escape communal hostilities and ethnic parochialism. Other hostile ethnicities arise as results of an economic class contradictions and conflicts. The rich are the first class ethnicity but cut across tribal ethnicities; while the poor are the second class ethnicity that also cuts across tribal ethnicities.
Many will argue that the rich and the poor are south Sudanese‘s only ethnicities not knowing that there also other ethnicities existing within those aforementioned ethnicities. Ethnicities of rich can be inherited from rich parents but also acquired through honest work but often through corruption.
Similarly, the ethnicities of the poor can also be inherited from poor parents but also acquired through lack of will to self liberate by working hard and doing whatever one may to liberate. After class ethnicity, we also have ethnicity of the educated that can be developed by parents and individuals that choose to educate themselves.
Lastly, we have the ethnicity of the fools who thrive in ignorance and are dominated and ruled by the educated; Which is very much the case for the majority of the south Sudanese people. No one is born a fools but one can inherit ignorance from the uneducated parents and acquire ethnicities of fools by choice; by leaving others to think for them. While illiterate parents may bequeath their children‘s ignorance, one remain in the ethnicities of fools by choice. Unfortunately, ethnicity of fools is the worse; and that is what I referred to earlier as an ethnic pride.
Since every south Sudanese has the full right to willfully choose what ethnicity to have, of all the above mentioned ethnicities, I have chosen south Sudanese ethnicity and the ethnicity of the educated. I have from today onward vowed to reject tribal ethnicity and ethnicities of fools and poor. Having said that I rejected the ethnicities of fools, I do not mean to say that some communities among the 63 tribes of South Sudan are fools. But People voluntarily join the ethnicity of fools from all communities of south Sudan.
While the ethnicities of fools, uneducated and poor is the worst and the fastest growing in south sudan; the very unfortunate part of it is that it give them a useless pride to be in those ethnic categories. Many peole are very proud of those ethnicities, and call traitors those who reject their tribal ethnicity, there is nothing worse than loyalty to useless ethnic pride, poverty and foolishness.
I may previously be among the ethnicities of fools and the poor and an uneducated as well, but the last ethnicity I want to have is the ethnicity that make us more African or south Sudanese (nationalism), more educated, more honest and more human.
